Graduate Faculty

The Graduate and Postdoctoral Faculty of the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (CGPS) is established under the authority of the University of Saskatchewan Council, whose powers and duties are in turn established by the University of Saskatchewan Act 1995.

In addition to its statutory powers and duties, the Graduate and Postdoctoral Faculty serves as a forum for the participation and engagement of members of CGPS in discussions of policies, plans, and decisions by the college administration that directly affect those areas for which faculty council has responsibility. The Graduate and Postdoctoral Faculty meet in May annually. Decisions made on behalf of the Graduate and Postdoctoral Faculty have been delegated to the Graduate & Postdoctoral Council of CGPS.

Graduate and Postdoctoral Council

The Graduate and Postdoctoral Council is a subset of the CGPS Faculty who hold the deferred authority of the Graduate and Postdoctoral Faculty. All nominated Graduate Council members at large representing the faculty body, graduate chairs, and representatives across all units and disciplines are encouraged to attend.

Greetings Colleagues

We have much to continue collaborating on to position ourselves as a leading institution in graduate studies and postdoctoral training.  This year we need to make significant progress on the various initiatives we began this past year namely reimagining graduate funding, undertaking a collegial college governance review, developing a CGPS Indigenous Strategy, developing flexibility within College policies, creating a framework for transformative skills, among other priorities. To move these initiatives will require the regular engagement of the CGPS Council that has purview over CGPS policies and, to accomplish this, we will be holding several extra dates in your calendars for CGPS Council meetings from the outset.  Should we not need the formal meetings, we will release the dates at least 2 weeks in advance and we will use the slots as Grad Chair Forums.

I also want to keep the momentum on the communication relationships we developed last year with regular Grad Chair Forums.  The special (extra) Council meetings will be 60 minutes for full Council, with an additional 30 min just for the Grad Chairs to remain to discuss issues of the day and share best practices.

A special note to department heads and graduate chairs, if your normal delegate to Council cannot attend due to conflicts with teaching, we remind you that an alternate can attend with full voting abilities.  Please let Lori Lisitza know and we will ensure your delegate has the necessary materials ahead of the meetings.

We are providing the full meeting schedule below/attached and calendar invites will follow.  Meetings will begin online and/or quickly move to a blended format depending on the size of the group.  I very much look forward to meeting you in person as the year unfolds.

Grad Chairs: Grad Chairs are responsible for providing information to, consultation with, and counselling of graduate students, and for admissions, awards, programs, and general administration. Grad Chairs are typically the chair of the department's graduate committee and a critical link between the student, the department and the CGPS.

CGPS Council: Representatives of units delivering graduate programming (usually graduate chairs and/or department heads), members at large and other representatives as named in its TORs.

Associate Dean’s Grad (or designates): Represent a direct link from their respective college/school to CGPS and ensures alignment of strategic projects and initiatives as they relate to graduate student programming and postdoctoral training.

Graduate Faculty: All voting members of the CGPS that are authorized to be involved in graduate and postdoctoral fellow supervision (includes adjunct professors).

Standing Committees of CGPS Council


Nominations prepares a slate of nominees for the positions of Members at Large on Graduate and Postdoctoral Council; nominates persons for positions on Council Committees, ad hoc Committees and standing Sub-Committees of the Executive that are not ex-officio or otherwise named by a participating unit of that sub-committee; to call in a timely way for nominations/volunteers to facilitate filling memberships as required.


Executive examine and report on all policy issues; recommend to the Graduate Programs Committee initiatives to strengthen graduate programs; recommend to the Graduate Academic Affairs Committee initiatives to improve the experience of graduate students; review Canadian and International admission standards of the College as needed; coordinate graduate program reviews.

Awards propose policy for scholarships, awards and honours, subject to review by the Graduate Council; establish procedures for awards and honours; establish such ad hoc committees as necessary for awards of bursaries, scholarships and prizes of CGPS; accept applications and nominations for NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, UGS, and other major awards, allocate available awards and take appropriate action; assist the Dean and Associate Dean in advocating enhancement of graduate student funding.

Equity & International

Equity provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas regarding the development of a diverse student body in graduate education among faculty, students, administrators, and staff; support the goals of the institution and the CGPS of achieving a more diverse graduate student population by providing information and advice on new initiatives and policy development; provide information to the CGPS on internationalization, diversity and education equity to facilitate development of appropriate action plans and strategies for increased internationalization and diversity; recommend recruitment initiatives for international, Aboriginal, and other graduate students from designated equity groups to graduate programs at the USask.

Graduate Programs

Graduate Programs Committee recommends to the Executive Committee any policy changes for the improvement of graduate programs; review and if appropriate recommend to Academic Programs Committee (of University Council) program deletions, significant changes in program requirements, and proposals for new programs; review and, where appropriate, approve changes to a program’s list of restricted electives, residency requirements, and selection criteria for admission; to name members to ad hoc sub-committees as may be required from time to time to handle academic matters relevant to graduate programs.

Academic Affairs

Graduate Academic Affairs review and approve, if appropriate, all recommendations for the admission of, and programmatic requirements for, Special Case Master’s and Special Case Doctoral Programs; act on admission appeals by individual students or by academic units in accordance with CGPS admission and appeal policy and procedures; review and approve, if appropriate, any programmatic changes involving special case students; review and, if appropriate, recommend approval of new courses, modifications to existing courses, and deletions of existing courses; act on appeals and grievances that affect graduate students and to establish appropriate procedures to do so.

Earned Degrees

Earned Degrees review and implement published procedures and criteria for the award; receive and solicit nominations for earned degrees; obtain necessary information on each candidate; make recommendations for awarding degrees. *preference will be given to D.Sc. and D.Litt. degree holders*


Interdisciplinary develop guidelines and to establish academic requirements and procedures which allow graduate students to put in place a program of unique interdisciplinary studies; fosters liaison and cooperation among academic and administrative units involved in graduate interdisciplinary activity; encourage recognition of interdisciplinary activity.

Postdoctoral Advisory

Postdoctoral advisory participates in strategic planning and recommend policy for Postdoctoral Fellows with regards to recruitment, status, research conduct and terms of appointment; provides oversight for the monitoring of career progress, career development and conflict resolution; assists in advocating the enhancement of funding opportunities for Postdoctoral Fellows.
